Bright Eyes bildades 1995 i Omaha, Nebraska och består även av Mike Mogis och Nate Walcott.
Debutalbumet "A Collection of Songs Written and Recorded 1995-1997" kom 1998. Först 2002 blev Bright Eyes uppmärksammad ordentligt i musikpressen som en ny artist. Samma år släpptes "Lifted or The Story Is In The Soil, Keep Your Ear To The Ground". 2004 toppade Bright Eyes Billboardlistan med två singlar, "Lua" och "Take It Easy (Love Nothing)". 2005 kom plattan "I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning" och "Digital Ash in a Digital Um". 2007 kom albumet "Cassadaga". 2008 och 2009 släppte Conor Oberst album och turnerade med Conor Oberst and the Mystiv Valley Band och Monsters of Folk. Albumet "The People's Key" planerades till release den 15 februari 2011, på Conors födelsedag.
